I have a 2012 GMC Denali, 1500. I don't think it has AFM, how would I know?

What motor? Easiest way to tell would be to flip through the dash options to instant MPG. If it shows v4 mode when cruising then you have AFM.

2012 has it with either engine. Regular oil changes and dexos oil you'll be fine.

mine has been fixed twice, the dealership covered it at 64,000, when it failed again at 80,000 I pulled all the AFM out and put a BTR truck 2 cam in it. works great still with 146,000

Changing the oil regularly isn’t the issue, I ran Amsoil in mine and kept the oil changed at 5,000 the problem is when the cylinders deactivate the lifter won’t always re activate and the rings will get carbon causing them to stick

If you get one of these era trucks with the AFM, can you just disable it and avoid the problem altogether? I'm looking at this winter to replace the 2000 and a 2012 to 2015 are probably the years I'll be considering.

Been absent on this for a few days...been at the beach while the Denali was repaired.
Oil - both service managers agree, just FYI, doesn't matter the oil - seen failures on Dexos, to include mobile 1, valvoline, and castrol - people doing very good oil changes and people who went past normal intervals, again, just FYI.

I've ordered the AFM Disabler to install to shut down the software. Not sure what we're going to do with it. The only reason this was covered under warranty, 8 months after the first failure on #4, was that I had them go ahead and do the other side. This was #7 failure.

Yes the lifter(s) on 1, 4, 6, 7 are different. I tried my best today to keep on V8, but it did go V4 when coming off acceleration. It drove great on the way home but we have until October to make a decision to keep or trade, since this repair was just one side. So the warranty that did both sides was 10/17/17. The cam also had to be changed again.

GM rep called me when I was at the pool. I listened for a few minutes and then pretty much gave my .02 worth: GM tried this with Cadillac and called it 8/6/4 long time ago. My father in law recalled buying one and the worst POS he ever owned. Now you, GM, rebrand it as AFM to get mileage numbers up on your large vehicles for Uncle Sam, in a controlled environment test track or drivers on scheduled road driving certain ways. Note to GM - most, not all, who buy your big vehicles buy to carry loads, tow, and pack the whole family in with room for no arguments on road trips - don't give a rats A$$ about the extended mileage that AFM gives - not if down the line we have failures like this!!!! I work in the oil business and could care less about MPG! She apologized and I said please tell someone with Technical Services to call me, tell an engineer to call me. GM has a problem with AFM and AFM lifters on 6.2 and 5.3 engines. You had a problem with dashes cracking, now you have a Class Action lawsuit. Could another be out there for 5.3 and 6.2 problems? She asked if anything else she could do? I said send me a check for $2000 for the first repair, 2900 miles out of warranty? She apologized and said she could no do that. Of course, I said, get someone with technical to call me, have a great day.

Big kudos to Southern Chevrolet in Foley AL. Gave my wife and son a brand new Chevy Colorado pickup to drive for 4 days until everything was road tested and we picked it up.

I asked the service manager about the ECU being able to see a disabler installed, he thought only 2016 and newer will show if the disabler has been installed and removed. So...why would GM want to know this? yeah, conspiracy to say "you did something to fix their Crap".

My 2006 Tahoe 5.3 (traded for the above 2010 Denali) had the dreaded bad heads that leaked antifreeze into the oil. There were thousands of those heads that had bad castings and GM wouldn't touch taking care of them. Said it was a third party vendor and they weren't responsible for that vendors quality control
i had the same problem in my 2001 burb and paid $1800 for new heads and a gasket job. couldn't believe that there were so many reports of this when it happened without GM covering it.

now i'm in a 2001 yukon denali but looking for a newer denali in the next 1-2 years; is this lifter issue strictly with the AFM motors?
