Surfing XT23 extra ballast?

Happy Thanksgiving gang! Question for those of you surfing XT23ís. Does the stock ballast do the trick, or are you still adding extra bags or lead? Thanks much,
A hopeful future XT23 owner

Plug n' Play bags are pretty good in the rear lockers, thought many want more! Add a bag to the floor and it makes up for the lost space with a massive wake

Hypothetical—-let’s say I’ve never purchased 100#of lead before. Where the heck do you buy that?

bumpin an old thread. Got to take out a XT23 my friend was looking at buying.

He test drove the XT22 at a Demo Day a few weeks ago from Stancraft Marine and fell in love. Went to talk numbers and couldn't get the boat he wanted for the price he wanted, but Stancraft had a leftover 2017 XT23 that they would sell him for a hell of a deal. Lucky for me, I am friends with the sales guy, as well as the potential buyer, so I got invited along to go for a surf.

I was a little worried about the wave not being as good as the XT22, being that it is a foot longer and has the same amount of ballast- so of course, as I usually do, I brought extra weight.

I have a 2014 X-30 with 800's in the rear and I run about 600 pounds of lead - so that is my benchmark for comparison.

It was only the 3 of us, so we didn't even bother surfing it stock. I am sure its okay stock - but I know it is not going to blow my mind given my current setup. So, we started with an extra 700ish pounds on the floor in front of the rear seat, 100 pounds under passenger seat, and 200 pounds in the bow. We kept the stock settings of 65% surf tab and 30% center tab, ran 11mph. This was mainly just to see what the wave could be if he ran a little lead and had some passengers on board.

I have to say, I was pretty impressed with that setup. It has a similar feel to my X30, but a little longer, a little taller. I would say that it is slightly better than my X30 is on a really good day(i.e. full of passengers and dialed in) -and that is saying a lot. Tons of power back in the curl, I was able to drop back and get the curl to break on top of my front foot and still bring it back. In my opinion, this is where the MC difference is - the power throughout the entire wave. I can't get back into the curl on a lot of other boats and still bring it back (I am 6'2" and 210 pounds surfing a 4'8 soulcraft).

We surfed that setup and my buddy was sold, so stoked he couldn't believe it.. mission accomplished, so then we started to play around a little.

We tried a few setups and we were able to produce a wave that went from just a large roller, to a super steep, beautiful wave. We ended the day by filling the 1,100 bag on the floor all the way full. moved all the lead (300 pounds) to the bow -offset to passenger side. center tab was at zero, surf tab was at 55%, running 11.2 mph. The RPM's were crankin, but it was fun to see what that thing could do. I have to say, the wave produced from that setup was insane, back leg on fire - insane. Very steep, waist high, just massive.

I can honestly say that my boat, even with an 1,100 on the floor in addition to all my extra weight - never produces a wave that good.

Also - I did ride the goofy wave, it was clean and long without moving the weight around (just the one person moving to surf side in the boat). It is backside to me, so I don't think I can give a detailed/helpful review, but I did surf it. It was just the stock settings, I don't even know what they were and didn't take pics (since I was surfing).

Needless to say, my buddy was smiling ear to ear. here are some shots of him.

Looks impressive. Will have to try that on my xt21. Esp the 55% tab as we have a 65% setting currently
