MEFI 3 ECM is cooked

Hey,

So been wrestling with our 2000 prostar 190 LTR 330, the problem was it wouldn't start. We finally broke down and took it to a mechanic to read the computer as that was the one thing we couldn't do ourselves and he said its fried. They also said its a MEFI 3 which is discontinued and therefore a new computer cost $3200 (CAD) thats a real kick in the pants. So were wondering what others have done in this situation or do you just have to suck it up and pay the money? They said we could try to get it repaired, any one had luck with that? What about switching the system to MEFI 4?

Any input or Help would be amazing!!

Check these guys out. Not sure how much the unit cost but surely worth looking into.

You can send the ECM to MefiBurn or to Indmar to be sure it is dead. If you send it to Indmar and its bad have them upload the appropriate CAL file to a MEFI 4 ECM and then repin your harness.

I'm not sure the factory MEFI 3 CAL file would work in a MEFI 4 but the old file would give a tuner something to work with. Most all of Indmar's CAL files are encrypted as well.

I agree that a call to Indmar is a good start. They my have a MEFI CAL file that will work with your motor. If so, I'm sure they would provide you with that CAL file Arizona Speed and Marine could use in a MEFI 4.

You can also buy a new/used mefi and indmar will reprogram. I bought a spare mefi 2 years ago and indmar programmed it for my boat for 45 bux.

Super helpful thanks!
I contacted MEFIburn as they seem to be THE guys when it comes to this stuff. He said GM used to build a piece of hardware that would adapt the MEFI 3 Harness to the MEFI4 computer. Said at the end of the day price might be similar to a MEFI3 refurb unit but I am thinking then at least your running an MEFI4 which is cheeper to replace and probably a superior piece of equiptment. He said they would be able to program it for the boat no problem. I will probably give Indmar a call too see if they have any options. I think the tough part about sticking with the MEFI3 is the cost of getting a unit if ours is unrepairable.

Does anyone have a wiring harness diagram that would show which pins or how many would need to be moved if switching to MEFI4? Or is trying to find and buy the extra harness probably worth it?

The newer the ecu the easier to procure.... if uou can go mefi 4, I would if not a real pain in the ***.

i.e. if you need an mefi 1 or 2 those are hard to find. And harder as time goes by. Heat kills digital components.. these ecu's are tough... i pop my dog house as soon as i get home to minimize heat exposure on ecu.

Hey thanks for all the help and input. We found a MEFI3 and MEFI4 pinning diagram and it looks like it might be a little meticulous but doable. Does any one have experience re-pinning from a 3 to a 4? Its always nice to know that its been done successfully. I agree with Mike going with newer ECU will I think be better in the long run.
