XT20 Surf Wake

We took our new XT20 out on a shallow lake in denver yesterday (Sloan’s Lake). Using the factory presets (L mellow and L steep) we were unable to get a wave with any push. The depth varies from 4’ to 6’. I understand that depth affects wake but several other boats were surfing without problems in same area. What would minimum depth be to achieve the best wave per factory equipment and hardware? Typically 4-5 adults onboard.

Thanks all.

Anything less than 8-10 youre wave is going to suffer in my experience. No matter how decked out the boat is

I went from surfing 30ft down to 8 and the wave literally disappeared yesterday. Was weird

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squat_effect

The above link is a pretty good basic description of why your wake washes out when you are trying to surf in shallow water. The drop in pressure that occurs means that your wave has less energy and thus "washes out."

You need some water depth to allow the wave to form. End of story

Thanks for the input. Based upon “squat effect” it sounds like the boat may have basically been close to pushing against the bottom. Looks like I’m heading to a deeper lake that is at least the draft squared in depth.

Were the other boats Surfing Mastercraft's with GEN2?

If not, they likely had a Gate System, GEN2 does not seam to perform well in less than 11 feet of Water. By my own and many other accounts here over the years, this is the case.

You make want to consider adding a portable gate so you can ride in the shallows. They are only $100 these days.

yeah sounds like depth to me...we've got a 17XT 20 w/ 4 adults it puts out a stellar wave for any boat yet alone a 20...but we're always in lakes 30-120ft+
