Checking for engine codes

Could someone tell me how to check engine codes on my 8.1? It is a crusader motor 2007.
Engine is randomly going into limp mode, sounding check engine alarm. I can shut it down and restart it, it will run a while and do it again.
Thanks

Look around on the engine for the ECU. It will look like one of these. My bet is it will look like the MEFI 5 but mostly like is a MEFI 6 which looks just like the 5.

Just out of curiosity, have you check the oil level and battery voltage?

Also, do you have a MIL(malfunction indicator light) lamp on? check engine light

OK, I've not worked on a crusader but I'm trying to find out which MEFI they had in 07. It just might be a MEFI 4.

The check engine light is the MIL lamp. Is the check engine light on after starting the engine? If it is on, does it flash at all before starting? IE key on but not running.

MC/Indmar were already usingn MEFI5 by then- I don't know why PCM would have used an older version. I have seen the Crusader ECM referred to as a 515 or 555, but some of them look similar to the Delphi units.

I'm watching this thread, too- someone I know has the same problem with their 2001 Cruisers yacht.

I had a similar problem this summer with my 5.7L Crusader in my 2006. It ended up being low voltage. I was able to switch it over to my other battery and had no more problems. I replaced my batteries and had no problems for the rest of the summer.
