Yes, definitely a "thing". Mine went out this fall with a temp warning but the new impeller was pumping water like mad as witnessed by looking at the sea strainer.

Took the check valve apart and found the spring broke in 3 pieces. Could likely find a spring at the local HDW store but Ilmor says it's set for 7.5 psi so not worth chancing it.

New valve has a much bigger diameter spring wire inside it. $41.99 at my dealer.

Did your dealer indicate how frequently these should be changed?

Nope, actually I had to inquire about it and present the Ilmor replacement part number which was in stock luckily. Ours broke at 350 hrs.
