New upholstery

I have a 2004 X-Star, the upholstery is in decent shape but I want to have it updated to the newer vinyl offered by mastercraft. Is anyone able to offer me suggestions on where to start with this project.

Jim Friant (The Upholstery Guy) is also in TN and more affordable from what I understand. He is doing my 2000 Maristar now. Will post pics when done. I did not update to current - just didn't seem to go with the boat - so I updated to circa 2006 vinyl / design.

Jim worked at MC in the upholstery shop for 15 years and now does this on the side.

I disassembled the boat myself and carried the cushions to him. Reasonable and very good to deal with so far.

PM if you want his contact info.

If you are handy you can remove the skins and have them sent to viper. They copy them and send you back the finished product. After that you can have the skins installed by a shop or do it yourself. I did my last boat start to finish and it was a chore but saved me a ton of money.

If you have a local do it make sure they do things properly. I had a rear seat completely rebuilt. Requested top notch materials and ended up with a plywood unprotected seat, cheap vinyl, and non SS staples. It cost me more in a headache than it was worth. With all that said Viper does extremely good work with great materials. You can request new MC style materials which are cooler to the touch, more durable, and look 100x better.

My skins cost me about 50 bucks to ship to Jim and couldn't have been happier with the work. It took them about 3 weeks to return them to me. My only gripe was I didn't get enough welting with my order and I was missing a skin. It all got straightened out but I have also heard of longer wait times on returned product. Do some research in the upholstery section as there are many many options available both depending on your skills and price restraints.

All the fabrics and vinyl can be seen here. Including all the nice ones that Mastercraft uses today on their boats

I sent mine up to Friant. He's as good as they come for skins. I have sent him three sets for recover. Not one flaw.

I am looking to get my 2000 -- 205V reupholstered, and have a few questions:

Has he finished the work? I'd like any pictures that you have available. Did you get a quote from Viper -- what were the cost savings? Where is he located?

I know that everyone on the TT site likes Viper, but his pricing seems high -- $4,000 ++

Thanks for all of the input.

Joe

Hi Joe-

It is not complete yet - he said it will be after Christmas or early January.

Pricing is better - I did not get a formal quote from Viper but was verbally told the numbers you mentioned.

I will be happy to post pics once complete.

Thanks,
Craig
