Live on Lake Kegonsa in Stoughton, WI. It's better than most as far as traffic. I'd say Rock in Janesville is a good option. The water isn't all that deep for surfing in my experience. You're not likely to hit if you pay attention to the channel, but a lot of it isn't as deep as I would wish for surfing. For other towed sports it's great, and there is calm water available nearly 24/7.

Any experience on the Rock River further south. Like near Oregon or Dixon? I just moved out here from the state of Oregon and am getting frustrated finding somewhere to go. Im used to driving 30 minutes in any direction to get to a Great Lake or reservoir....

Well depending what a western suburb of chicago is to you there are lots of options within 3 hours....hell lake shelbyville is 3 hours depending where you are at. Few cooling lakes down in southern il would work as well. You also have whitewater lake, Lauderdale lakes, lake delvin, Clinton lake fox river, rock river,il river, bangs lake, the chain(fox lake, lake marie, grass lake, petite lake....)
Depending how car west of chicago you are there are some lakes in Indiana.
