I am thinking about placing just one outdoor camera up on 2nd story soffit to capture goings on in front yard and street - that's it for now - need continuous recording or motion triggered, and do have a spare laptop I can set up and leave running.

Any comments on using something like a Foscam FI9900 and their Blue Iris Software for a starter kit? I'm trying to avoid hard wiring the camera as some locations that I might add later will be a real challenge.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with Foscam products.

What is the resolution of the DVR and what resolution are you looking for?

I was told that Nelly's Security is a good place to buy from. Hikvision told me they aren't an authorized dealer, but they say they cover the warranty, which tells me they either eat bad units or their importer handles it for them- the serial number tells the manufacturer the original destination. They also sell Dahue.

My current model does D1 resolution. I figure if I purchase any new cameras they might as well be 1080 so that I could more to a higher res later on.
