Prostar 197 from 2005-2013?

G'day all,

Looking for info regarding current 197's. I currently have a 2005 197, and looking to upgrade in the future, and wondering people thoughts on the difference between the past few models up to and including the 2013, including change from the MCX motor to the 5.7 Ilmor variant?

Is the 2013 worth the effort over say 2011/2012 models? From what I can gather, only slight tweaks of the hull/ rudder ect has happened over the past few years, and still same basic hull for past 10+ years.

Hope there are some people with first hand experience between year models, and honest feedback.

If you have the MCX or LY6 and powerslot and the '06 rudder upgrade I wouldn't replace it with a newer one. I'd kill to get my 05 back.

What JohnE said. However, I know a lot of people who are particularly fond of the 2010 TT. My friend has one, and it skis well. But I don't know that I think the wake or steering is too different from the 2005 I have driven with the rudder upgrade.

If you like your boat and you don't have the above upgrades, do them and save your money. Unless your one of those people who need the current motor because that's what pulls tournaments, or needs Zero Off for some reason.

Don't know if this helps but I changed from a 08 TT with MCX to a 11 TT with 6.0 Ilmor. Not that there was anything wrong with the 08 it's just that it was time to turn it over. My seat of the pants impression is that the 11 is a leap forward in refinement, quiteness, smoothness and I'm not really sure how to describe the feel goodedness. It's just nice. In terms of the way they ski, handle, I'd say they're the same although the 11 may be slightly more composed. I know it's not apples for apples as there is a jump in capacity but MCX Vs 6.0 is chalk and cheese. Response to throttle input is instant and at higher RPM there is none of the hard working coarseness that the MCX small block showed in the upper range. Can't really comment on other engine variations but the 6.0 is good for 6 mph over the MCX at WOT. Depending on where you are, I'd be happy enough if you where close by to bring your over and drive them back to back. Then you can make up your mind.

Wouldn't you need to go back to a 93 PS205 in order to upgrade?

Thanks for all the input. I am out with a knee recon at the moment, and we always want a new boat.Just have a few minor cosmetic blemishes in the vinyl, ect, nothing structural. Currently have 1170hrs on motor, never been apart and you wouldnt know it had any more than 100hrs on it by the way it runs and looks.
I would consider a later upgrade just because I can at the moment.

dihrdskir....mate, thanks for the offer, but I am in Townsville, so guessing nowhere near yourself. I take it you would prefer the 6l over the 5.7l engines?

Is there much difference in economy for mainly slalom course use??

I can't really speak for the Ilmor setups.

IIRC lot of the members here that compared the indmar MCX to the LQ9 and LY6. Said the they prefer the MCX. Said the LY6 and LQ9 were both a rather "stiff pull in the course".

No problem. You're right I am nowhere near Townsville but the offer is still on the table. I cannot compare the 5.7 ilmor as I have never owned anything equipped with one. I have owned a number of boats over the years with various configurations of the venerable small block in 270 to 350 hp . For grin value the 6.0 has it with ample power right across the rev range. As for grunt we can deep water start 4 100 kg barefooters and hold 40+. The MCX in the same boat could not. Depends on what you want to do with it if you are prepared to part with the extra cash but from what I hear the 5.7 will be enough.
