Busted Exhaust Riser, new manifolds too?

1990 240sc, Indmar HO454. 100% Freshwater, never in salt.

End of last season: Hmm...whats causing the rusty spot and the exhaust riser to run hot...

This season, removed driver's side riser to put in a new starter... Giant hole in the water jacket right below said rusty spot. Far enough downstream that the engine never took on any water.

Can't get pics to link from amazon prime storage.

53-1020 riser. 750ish hours on it. Manifold looks okay, not sure what happened to the water jacket in that riser.

Should I consider replacing the manifolds as well?

Thanks in advance!

Matt

Never mind... Guess everyone is at the lake and doesn't have a busted riser.LOL

Pulled the other side, looks great. The hole looks more like a bad casting that failed. It is a big jagged hole with fractures radiating away from it.

Just ordered 2 NOS, risers from skippersmarine.com for $90 each +$64 shipping.

Not bad.

Should be at Beaver lake, AR for Independence Day!!!

Later,

Matt

Sorry, I missed your pm over the Memorial weekend.

Hope just the risers do the trick. Often, the exhaust will be rusted bad enough the mounting surfaces are too thin to just do the risers. Hope you got lucky and back on the water for the weekend!

I have a marine business account with Land and Sea so I ordered Barr e-coated replacement parts.

2 - 53-1078 manifold e-coated
2 - 53-1077 riser e-coated
4 - 53-1017 riser gaskets
2 - CHVA 184 P Barr manifold mounting package

Matt I would check your manifolds for water passages being restricted. Just did mine, one stoppedbot up the other one just before stopping up. My risers were both ok.

Thanks Don and Brian. I took a dremel cutting bit to the passaged on the manifolds and cleaned them up inside. Plenty of thickness and just knocked the rust flakes and chewed the passages back to solid metal. Ran a vacuum the whole time so I sucked it all out.

The riser on the the other side looked great and so did the manifolds. I think it must have been a bad casting by the fractured look of the bad riser inside.

New old stock Indmar risers showed up yesterday. Just gotta hit them with some paint and bolt them up!

Later,

Matt
