Jim,

Thanks for all the guidance. My sound system is much, much better. I ran a new ground from the back of the head unit to the Amp ground, and the buzzing/whining cleared right up.

I have not removed the old ground wire, which had been connected to a distribution stud, then the battery directly, just in case I got lucky. But with the new ground connected to the amp (and sounding good), and the old one still on (but not touching), I was able to touch the old wire to different ground locations (distribution stud, battery, other stud) and the squeal came back. I did this just to test that that was the problem.

Overall, sound is very good. I still have a very, very faint ringing from the speakers when the whole system is off, but it is so very quiet, I can live with it.
