Got in the course for the first time in 10 years yesterday and had some great coaching. Remember that my PB was 30 MPH @15 off and I'm 51.

My original plan was to try to run at 28 and 15 off and I am SOOOOO happy I listened to the boat owners coaching.

The guy coaching started me @ 26 MPH and 15 off and did the following:
Pass one- Pull out on the one ball side and hold the line in a cut position keeping an imaginary line 5 feet out side 1, 3 and 5.
Pass two- Pull out on the two ball side and hold the line in a cut position keeping an imaginary line 5 feet out side 2, 4 and 6.
Pass three- Don't worry about the entry gates, but cut in the pre-gates and get out early for 1 and run the course.

I was able to get 6 the first pass, 5 the next and 6 my fifth and final.

Needless to say, I'm motivated to get back and start to work up the speed, but I tasted success and felt like I accomplished something vs leaving pissed and deflated.

It's tough when I have no spotter, or friends where I live.

do you look at the starting gates as you start to make your first cut to go thru them?

When do you start looking at the first ball?

1. Yes, you want to try to aim at the right gate ball. You start that cut as the tip of the boat goes through the entrance gates.

2. You don't look at it. You look at an imaginary spot 15' before the buoy.

Don't worry about the gates at this point. Do your pull out and start to cut as the boat hits the entrance buoy then you should be a bit early. Even better I think is to start on the one ball side and do a simple pull to the one ball to start.

AMEN!! Get a full pass at your desired speed THEN worry about the gate. Cutting through the pre-gates and out to one is my advice. If you're late for 1, you don't stand a chance of getting a good pass. Note: all this advice is from a guy that made his first pass minus the start gate in in 10 years LOL
