Doctor told me to start acting my age!

I don’t act, or look like it, but I’m 56. After a torn meniscus in one knee about 15 years ago, I started to have lower back issues due to the fact that I was using my back to lift rather than my knees. I had to start using a drop-ski to slalom because I couldn’t put the knee into my chest to deep water start, but I had no problem wakeboarding, barefooting, and trick skiing on two. Once the kids moved out, I did less wakeboarding because it’s just my wife driving in the boat and the wake is less than desirable. So, I got the bright idea to get two 400lb side sacs and give it a try. The first weekend I took it easy, but this weekend we had five extra people in the boat as well. My first landing was right in the curl but I did feel a little glitch in my lower back. The second landing was in the flats and I knew something was wrong. I managed to get back in the boat, but after sitting for the trip back to the dock, I couldn’t even stand up.

I had to crawl off the back of the boat into the water (with a jacket) and float to the shore. My son brought the golf cart to the shore and I put my knees on the floor board and my face on the seat in order to get to the house. I was on my hands and knees Saturday and I could walk bent over on Sunday by the time I got to the urgent care center. They gave me a shot of steroids in one cheek and motrin in the other, and I was able to walk upright in about four hours. The physician said that there appears to be some deterioration in the lower disks (but I don’t know what I’m looking at) and she believes that the curve in the spine is from muscle contractions…maybe. So, I’m seeing the orthopedic doctor this afternoon. The physician said to me “You need to decide what is more important, living out your retirement walking or rolling around in a wheelchair?” I told her that I will give up the wakeboarding but I’m always going to do something behind the boat. No surfing…ever.

Ouch .. been there as i have two lower back disk issuess ... no one knows how painful it is to literally crawl on your hands and knees to the bathroom

Go to the specialist and they will tell you what is happening ... compression, etc

Biggest thing for me is back stretches ... a good orthopedic will get you up and going by strengthening the lower back muscles

I cut up a big tree and put down 8 5-gal cans of blacktop sealer yesterday so I'm typing this laying on the floor!

Hang in there

Deal with this on a regular basis. Had x-Rays, MRI's, been to surgeons, chiropractors, my own doctor and no one can determined the issue except maybe core.. To me its mostly mental and stress related with a mix of "damn, that wave I hit made me tweak by back"....

Good luck!!

Oh but I do. That was me Sunday morning, about 5 minutes to get from the bed to the toilet. Went over the front of the ski Friday morning. Hate that feeling when you have enough time to think in your head "this is going to hurt". Then of course I don't learn and go out with my neighbor Saturday morning for a couple of sets.

Hopefully you're not out of commission too long.

I have yet to try it yet, but my buddy who has a ruptured disk swears by yoga. He prefers hot yoga. I've had him out wakeboarding before where he could barely get out of the boat after a tweak. He battled it for years and since he found yoga, really hasn't had any issues.

I've been dealing with small, lower back lockups for years, usually after I've leaned over a machine at work for 30 minutes and then tried to stand back up. This is first time that I've had a shooting pain down my butt cheek and the back of my thigh, which was the compression issue. I go to the gym twice a week and I know that I need to get some proper core/back strength exercises.

When it was time to leave the lake on Sunday, I was still crawling. The easiest thing to do was to crawl up 6 steps and let my wife take me to the truck on the golf cart...but I refused to let my neighbor see me in that condition. I went up the 30 steps on the other side of the house and crawled across the asphalt to the truck. It's a man thing.

Maybe time to switch to a flex wakeboard if you haven’t already?

Doesn't Goode make a jacket with lower back support or some sort??

I'm 48 and also starting to get a little worried what's in store for me in the next few years....
