Support Tube Saga

Oh Boy!! After hammering the steering cable end out of a badly corroded support tube and disassembling the clamp, I was imagining that this was going to be one of the easiest and simplest things to replace. How was I to know that the threaded style Morse tube and clamp are obsolete and nonexistent in the boat parts world? After reading everyoneís solutions, all of which were over $100.00, I decided to take a different route. I bought a new style tube from West Marine and took it to my local machine shop and had them turn it down and cut new threads on a lathe. Total cost to me $45.00, and some sweet time in an old school machine shop! Score!

Today was a great day in terms of boat things! I got the support tube modified and ready to install as well as I put the fuel sender and the pickup tube in the fuel tank. Feels awesome to actually be putting stuff together. One step closer! Oh, and a shout out to my first mate, happy 25th anniversary!

Truer words have never been spoken or in this case, typed. This quote should be the description for the Restorations & Refurbishments forum.

I know it seem like Iím jumping all over the place, but I promise there is method to my madness! I have ordered a BOATload of parts and while Iím waiting on their arrival, I am doing all the so called ďlittleĒ maintenance and repairs that should have been done throughout the olí girlís life. If I learned anything from the six years I spent in the Navy, itís that boats require constant attention and care. Sadly, this one was rode hard and put away wet more than once. Itís my promise to her to bring her back to the condition she deserves to be in. Itís funny how boats always seem to take on a life of their own and itís a real shame when one gets neglected. While I have the tank out, I decided to take care of everything in the transom area. I only want to do this job once! Today I worked on the rudder. Since Iím replacing the helm and steering cable, it only makes sense to clean and lubricate the rudder. The grease fitting was rusted off, yet, the rudder turned freely. It was a bit notchy feeling, so I removed it and found old grease built up on the shaft. I will clean it all off, replace the o-rings and I have removed, tapped and replaced the grease fitting on the rudder housing. I also replaced the grease fitting on the support tube clamp and bought new stainless hardware for it. After assembly and the new helm system, she should steer like brand new!
