I thought we had moderators

Earlier this week, a notice was posted that a conference call with the moderators was to be held and since then, I have seen one person, using Cyrillic font, start several threads. Some of us flagged the initial ones and I still see new ones from the same person. I went to the members list and found that I had to go halfway through page 37 to find a real member.

Do we still have moderators or is Team Talk just being left alone, to rot?

ankkagvrax is the "person" posting these.

Definitely noticed an influx of spammers within last few weeks. The mods should make it more arduous to establish a user ID. How about adding some of those funky words you have to input like you see on ticketmaster. Maybe thats aleady being used- i don't remember.

So what does a guy have to do to get some viagra around here?

/edit. Jeez Jim, you weren't kidding. 37 pages of spambot. I think there is a box in vbulletin that will blur that login key just a touch to knock out a good number of these bots.

Moderators are here everyday during the week. Over the last week, spammers have been invading. The problem has been cleaned up and all spammers have been banned.

JimN:

What teleconference thread are you referring to? The last posting of a teleconference was over a year ago and little happened in response to that one.

We've been through this. Unless there has been a change in philosophy, the moderators have control only of posts. They don't have any power over posters. The decision as to whom to approve for registration and whom to ban from the site is entirely the province of the site administrators. For reference, TTAdmin's last appearance on TeamTalk was 11/16. There are two other admins, TMC (last here on 10/14) and TeamMC (last here on 1/5/07).

Don't blame the moderators. They have no power.

I think that changed once Doug and I left. Apparently you have to own a new(er) MC in order to get those permissions.

Got ya- I meant to direct the suggestion at whomever controls the registration- Admin.

Actually, in all seriousness, when Beau and I were mods, Admin hand screened new members. Thus, all things resembling spamming were actual people, often Mastercraft owners. Since that time, it appears they have gone back to using the "site key" to screen bots. Like I mentioned before, I think there is a function to make it a little more difficult to read so that the bots efforts to register are frustrated and the process for real people just requires more squinting.

My assumption is that the mods can't do much more than to clean up the mess until the registration process gets some bot proofing.

All the moderators can do, historically here on TT anyway, is delete spam posts individually. TTAdmin could give moderators access to the Administrator's control panel if they wanted, which would allow moderation of new members as well as banning other members, new or otherwise, who break bad. Access to that control panel can be customized so that these moderators would NOT have access to the "back end" of the site and be able to change basic settings, style sheets, etc.

Like virtually all discussion forums on the internet, this one is run in a manner that reflects the expectations, desires, and capabilities of the people who own it.

As to preventing registration of spam bots, there are many, many different ways of doing that. I own/admin two vBulletin sites and admin another one, not to mention participating on several others. I have never seen a site that allows as much spam in as this one does.

Sorry- I saw 11/20 but not the 08 part. Must be a coincidence that this happened the same time last year.

What about the 36-1/2 pages of TT Newbies with no posts?
