boat lift brackets

Edit: sorry, i have no clue how this post ended up under the tower forum, hopefully a moderator can move it to a appropriate category. i thought i put it under trailers.

i just purchased a used Hewitt 3000# cantilever lift to lift a 97 PS 190. i need to do some modifications to the lift by replacing the bunks to accommodate a inboard. i plan on using 2x6 horizontal boards for supporting the boat but i am unsure what to use for the metal brackets to support the bunks. What have you guys used to create the brackets to get the necessary clearance to clear the tracking fins and prop shaft? I have seen brackets that are designed for trailers that are 11ga galvanized metal and as long as 24 inches but i just wanted to check and see if you guys had any other suggestions or products that i should consider. is there materials available at a hardware store that i should consider?

The bracket in the link that you provided will work fine, along with the swivel piece that is below it. Have you tried contacting a Hewitt dealer? Hewitt makes a nice ABS covererd bunk that would be far superior than using a 2x6 with carpet. They probably run $200 or so but will outlast the wood/carpet by a long shot.

thanks for the feedback. i have not contacted a Hewitt dealer about the brackets they make specifically for the lift. I am trying to keep the cost down as much as possible and figured 2x6 pressure treated lumber and the trailer brackets would be my best option. thanks again for your help.

Hi Beach Bum, I am in the exact same position as you and was doing some research on this yesterday. It seems like this is a good option... $200 + shipping gets you the brackets and carpeting, and all you do is provide the lumber. They have several kits depending on the size of your lift crossmembers.

Unless I (or you) can find a better option, I will probably pull the trigger on this kit. Please let me know if you find anything cheaper/better!

Here's my old and new boats on our lift (to get different angles). I think our brackets are galvanized steel angle iron, but the cross piece is different.

looks lit i am going to go with my original find for the bunk brackets and use some U bolts i saw at overtons as fasteners. i am also going to double the 2x6 's to give some additional strength. thanks for all the input guys. much appreciated.

FWIW,

I just replaced my bunks with treated 2x6 and carpet to keep the cost down. single 2x6's will be fine. I have 2 lifts with this set up (one with a PS 190, one with a 20ft Bu) and it works great.
