steam cleaning vinyl?

I'll try and make this short. So i'm redoing the interior on my '89 prostar 190. I have the skins off the drivers seat and in some areas the vinyl is so hard that I need to flatten it out so i can get a good template from it. So I thought I would use a hand steamer similar to this one at amazon http://goo.gl/KIslqo anyway it did the trick but had a crazy side affect. It cleaned it better than i've seen any detergents clean vinyl. My question is on vinyl on other boats that is dirty is there any negative affect to using a steamer on the material?

of course always hit it with 303 once your done but that should be a given.

Steam is just warm water. I'm sure it's heating up the vinyl which is releasing the dirt. I don't see how it could hurt anything unless you melted the vinyl.

Yes, installers use steamers when stretching the vinyl. Just do not heat it up too much and do not soak it...should work fine.

I did it all the time on my old boat with no problems at all.

OK please note that I was not going for cleaning at all on this but making it more pliable so i could get a good pattern. So I did not take time scrubbing it or anything but like i said the difference just in hitting it for less than I would guess 2 seconds is crazy.

This is really intriguing. Anyone else in the know about Vinyl care to chime in about this? iIs steam ok to use on vinyl in small doses?

I'm starting to think about all the parts on the boat I could steam clean rather than scrub...hmm...

the one thing I am most concerned about with it and using it would be the forced introduction of more moisture. If you could leave it air out for a day you would probably be ok because it would dry out then you could apply 303 to it, but I'm still on the fence with it because of that. now about any other parts on the boat fiberglass, metal, etc..... I do not see any problems with but with each type of grime comes a different type of cleaning to be used so i'm not sure it would work other places even.
