'00 maristar 210 transmission leak

Hello all,
I have just received a ’00 maristar 210 from a neighbor & have a few questions as I am completely new to inboards. When I picked it up there was about 4-5” of water in the bilge area with transmission fluid floating on it. Now that I drained it there appears to be pinkish trans fluid coming from the most forward part of the transmission. I assume this is not normal & needs to be fixed… (Once again I am completely green here, so please be descriptive when responding, or pictures are even better!) Can someone point me in the direction of a how-to for oil change & trans fluid change?

Also, as you can see the boat had a rather neglected life in salt water. What else should I do to it to get it water ready?

Welcome and post up some pictures using photobucket.. the picture upload here is not working right now.

pinkish fluid is not good - most likely water intrusion into transmission via cooler... could be okay -

get a fluid extractor - something like this - look around you can get them cheaper.

does it run? - most likely get ready to replace exhaust manifolds and risers. Hopefully not too neglected - but pictures needed.

Thanks for the reply! Here are a few pictures. I can add any others if needed.

I added 2.5qt of fluid to the trans dip stick hole & it is still not registering on the dipstick. How much fluid is required? Also how & where is the fluid drained from?

Where would I locate the transmission cooler (I have no clue what it looks like) & what do I check for?

I started her up last night for a min. She ran rough, but is running. The alternator is locked up, so that will go on the list as well.

Are there any links for How-to write-ups or where can I find the service manual for this boat?

My experience tells me the transmission output shaft seal in the side of the transmision closest to the engine is probably leaking. The transmission needs to come out of the boat to resolve. This is not a simple job. The output shaft itself is probably corroded so the surface that the seal rides on is probably pitted which can be repaired using a speedi-sleeve kit available from Indmar.

Plus 1 on the rear tranny seal.. follow the 2 hoses coming out of the transmission - they lead to the cooler.

The trans cooler will look something like this:

Probably painted black, and to the rear of the engine. The water lines will be attached to the ends of the cooler, probably 1 1/2 -1 3/4" lines, the transmission fluid lines go to the two smaller fittings, probably 1/2- 3/4" hose. Remove the two water hoses, look down the middle of the cooler for any debris. You should be able to see through all the little cooling passages to the other end.

Why (I'm not questioning y'alls expertise, just trying to understand.) would you think it is the inner seal; is that a common problem?

Certainly the most common reason one would find ATF in the bilge on a 14 year old salt water boat.

It's not hard to fix if you know what you're doing, but there are a lot of steps and you do have to pull the transmission, therefore the flooring too to get a V-drive out.

While the transmission is out, I would take the opportunity to replace the drive line coupler/cutlass bearing and would probably be inclined to pull the bell housing and replace the flex plate with an aftermarket upgrade. And naturally you'd want to replace both input and output shaft seals while you're there. I'd think about replacing the transmission cooler on a 14 year old salt water boat too.

Do you know where I could find a service manual for the boat (this procedure), or a write-up somewhere I could go by? I have been searching but have come up with nothing.

Don't forget to address the corroded output shaft and be prepared that you may not be able to seat the new seals due to pitting of the seat.
