New alternators are sized to handle everything the manufacturer is supplying, plus a small margin. Adding loads to it, whether in the form of lights, high powered stereo, extra pumps, etc, stresses the charging circuit more and causes more heat (current causes heat and that's why wires need to be sized correctly/devices need to be selected, based on current demands). Excessive heat is what kills electronics and really, everything. The good news- having an alternator rebuilt to handle more isn't terribly expensive.

Do you have access to an amp clamp? Does the alt have any stickers to make you think it's not o.e.? Like reman by... If you have access to an amp clamp you can clamp on the charge wire and bring to specified rpm and check output with no load. Should give you an idea of if its been upgraded if you know factory spec
