Buying a 1998 Maristar

I'm considering buying a 1998 Maristar 200 VRS and I want to know more about them from the owners of them.
  • Are they good for waterskiing?
  • Are they inexpensive to fix?
  • If I was going to replace the engine, what would you replace it with?
(The 5.7L Corvette LT-1 engine may need to be replaced and it is out of the boat.)
  • Are they reliable?
  • What would you pay for one in average condition (paint faded, and interior is warn)?

Others will chime in but first thing is: Welcome to the forum.
1 if the LT1 engine is all there, even in boxes get it rebuilt. It will keep the boats value rather than being a re-power.
2. I believe all Maristars are V-drive, not optimum for water skiing but certainly better than an I/O. The best water ski wake is with a direct drive (hump in the middle) of the boat.
3. Nothing is inexpensive to fix when it comes to a boat. The location of the engine and access to items may require longer repair times vs. a DD.
4. A MasterCraft boat can be very reliable, it depends on its previous owners' habits.
and how attentive they were to the maintenance.
5. no idea what it may be worth without pics. See what the pricing trend is, this is premium season right now til early July.

well summarized. sounds like a poorly maintained boat. hull oxidized and vinyl problems. unless you get a steal, i'd pass.

Not only costs, but with all that to repair you'd probably miss out on the season.

Thanks for the advice. Im going to probably check out the boat this weekend and bring a marine mechanic with me to do the final assessment since he would probably be the one who will do all of the work.

To have hull buffed and waxed you may pay $22/ft. The interior may be 3k from viper who may be one of the best in the business. Not many on boat trader but do a nationwide search to get an idea of asking prices.

I just traded my '98 Maristar 225 in on a new MC. The Maristar was a terrific boat for us. Not sure where you are located exactly, but here's a link to mine that Midwest Mastercraft has for sale now on their lot in Minneapolis. Also gives you a good idea on price as well if you're comparison shopping. Good luck!
