S&S Escort Engine/Block Problem
Some of you may know that I am rebuilding a 77 S&S. Today I was breaking down the engine for painting. I found one freeze plug missing. I have never heard the engine run, but supposedly, the engine is less than two years old. Not sure what to do? Would you replace the plug, or just go ahead and break the engine down and have the block checked. Boat came from NC, so freezing could be a possibility. I pulled one valve cover and the rockers and pushrods are clean, so it is possible the engine is "new". Thoughts on how to approach this issue? Next step? I did not want to have to breakdown the engine if possible.
Thanks. |

Put it back in and do a pressure test of the coolant loop and then a compression test.

Motor is out of boat. Have engine mounts off, alternator, brackets, raw water pump, fuel pump, etc. pretty much everything except waterpump, manifolds and carb. Was thinking of reinstalling freeze plug and then do a coolant pressure test as suggested (if possible). I did not see a crack or anything around the plug hole.

You can do the test yourself with the right equipment. Takes a kit (magnet prod and particle matter) and a 110v outlet.
