After looking at it, and trying to determine what happened with no real idea, I'm going to wait for Corey to chime in with details.

When did Malibu get rid of the damping box?

I'm thinking it ran up and stopped on a big rock that wasn't normally an issue, but was only slightly below the water level with such low water in some lakes this year.

I'm thinking the rope was floating in the water and got caught in the prop and wrapped around the rudder at speed. As the prop spun and tightened the rope, it torqued the strut and rudder enough to crack the fiberglass and gel coat, and eventually to remove the prop blades before the load stopped the engine.
But that's pure fantasy; I'll be interested in hearing the real story. /frank

Wish I had more information on how this happened, all we got was "the boat hit a rock pile". It's a Moomba XLV.

I had a similar "bump" in July. Lake levels were really low around here this year and we were on a very familiar section of the lake. The damage didn't look nearly as bad as the Malibu, but it ripped the rudder off. My repair included removing the engine, exhaust too. All in it was about $6,500.

Since it's winter I figured you guys would like to see some pictures of the progress on this boat. So far the engine and all underwater gear have been removed. The pretty much all of the underwater gear took a big hit, that force transferred through the hull breaking the strut mounting plate.
Work is going to slow for a bit as our techs are headed to service training followed by more boat show prep but I'll try to keep posting photos as the job gets done. |
