Buying a boat - gelcoat cracking issue
Need your help!!
I'm looking at buying a 2001 MC X30 -- it's several hundred miles away, so I haven't seen it in person. I did have the seller email me many up close photos to reflect any imperfections in the interior and the paint. All the pics seem to check out, with the exception of one - it concerns me a bit. I noticed several very small hairline vertical cracks no more than an inch long along the rub rail, spanning over approx. 8-10 inches...one every half-inch or so. These are located directly below where the tower attaches to the side of the boat, near the windshield. I have pics -- Thanks, CANT REPEAT for uploading them!! All in all, the boat is in good to great condition, considering it's 11 yrs old. Are these hairline cracks common for this age of a boat? Is there a way to know if it's just the gelcoat vs. a more serious fiberglass issue? Please help! Thanks! Last edited by Eckie; 06-19-2012 at 03:58 PM. |

I would say $400 to $800 bucks to fix the cracks. They look cosmetic to me and other then looks I do not think they would be an issue.

Probably hit a dock hard with the rub rail and caused the spider cracks or the top deck and hull were fastened too tight from the factory. $400-800 to fix, to do it right you have to pull back the rub rail. Or just live with them and use them to get a bigger discount on the purchase

I had similar cracks on my Prostar 190 from the non genuine tower putting stress on the area where the deck meets hull. Curious as to whether both sides are the same on this boat, in which case the area may need some reinforcing and gel repair. Is it my imagination or are the tower legs slightly curved downwards, it could be that the top of the tower has hit something?
