prostar bimini question

I bought a used bimini top 07-08 model year. I was wondering why the rear support arms have a sliding retractable piece that can be set in either the short position or the longer extended position? the front support legs do not have this. I got to thinking about it and wondered if the retractable rear support legs doubled as folded-up/storage support legs when the bimini is not in use? obviously if thats the case I would need to add an extra set of mounts further down the boat gunwales for this to be applicable, correct? as I said I bought it used and have no instructions on mounting etc. thanks!
