Greeves, Check out the private lakes in Huxley (dreamlake estates) Great for tourney skiing but not much else. you can find them on Facebook.
Best flat water I know is on the Missiissippi. A bit of a hike from Ames but where I ski which is near Fairport IA, the pool is 22 miles long and we rarely get blown out. If the wind is out of the east or west then Blanchard Island slough south of Muscatine IA is more than 2 miles of smooth water. SP, Mertens shoot me an email. I have a case of dryski that needs to be cured. |

here are the locations I have footed the main channel. To put aside fears of the river check out the Corp of engineers river maps.

I lived alot of years in Ames and there are some places to find some water close. Try Little Wall Lake just north of Story City. Its been a couple years since I was there, but its a good ski lake during the week. Also dont be afraid of Saylorville, I took my 197 out there alot. You need to be there early or if the water is high go west of the mile long bridge. Its not real deep so it keeps the majority of the big boats out of there.

Anyone headed to the river this weekend?
We've been down the last couple nights. Great skiing/footing water with the exception of a few sticks since the levels are up a bit. |

I am sure you all read about the collision at the river this past weekend. The river can be a scary place when you mix alcohol, narrow river, and powerful boats with lack of enforcement. My thoughts go out to the family involved. Please don't be stupid and risk yours and others lives when out on the water.
Anyone going out this weekend, sorry storm34, didn't see your post. We went to the lake, but would have changed plans if I would have gotten online. Mark.. |

It's really sad someone had to lose a life in that situation. After talking with the guys, it sounded like alcohol played a factor and the accident could have prevented.
Mark you are absolutely right, the river isn't a place to be screwing around. Just last night I almost had multiple accidents with a Jet ski. He passed me on the left, then proceeded to go into freestyle mode as he cut across my bow. I slowed down and headed the other direction only to find him passing me again and doing the same in the very same location last weekend's accident took place. He was totally clueless on a 50+mph machine. It could have been very bad if I wasn't paying attention. Friday night is a maybe for me. I'll be in Kansas City saturday, but it's looking like I'll make it down Sunday. Boat safe everyone! |
