Tow Vehicle Octane Recommendations

Do you follow your owner's manual on fuel octane recommendations while towing your rig over long hauls? If so, is the mileage/performance difference measurable? Thanks...

Yep.
Diesel, that's what's recommended in my owners manual for my Duramax. Gets significantly better fuel mileage than gasoline and there is a significant performance difference. I notice the performance every time I pass another tow rig pulling a good size boat or camper with a truck burning gasoline!

Sorry WildPeace, I couldn't resist! I know you didn't ask about diesel vs. gas and I am not trying to hijack your thread, but it's bound to come up later on in the thread.

Seriously though, If you want towing performance and mileage, you should consider a diesel.

Hope you get some actual real feedback on your question.

I just run 87 in my '04 Hemi Dodge 1500. Only towed on the highway once so far (Only had the boat and truck for a couple of months) and got 12.5-13 MPG @ 65 MPH.

I towed my 91 from WV to FL w/ my 04 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3 3.73 2WD and got 15-16mpg the whole trip on 87. Not to mention about 1000 lbs in the bed too. not bad if you ask me.

Tow with my 08 Nissan Crew Cab 4X2, owners manual recommends premium for "best performance", however I elect to run 87 octane all the time. Have a tandem axle trailer that I use to pull my Z or 510 to the races with. Use truck also to pull the 88 190 Prostar with. Usually cruise between 70-80MPH and get about 16-17 MPG with no Knocking, plenty of power for passing and merging into traffic. Would consider upping octane if in a more hilly area than north Fl, however the smaller hills I have encountered have not caused any problems.
Did have an 06 F250 6.0 Diesiel before the Nissan, it would get 13-15 when pulling the cars, and cost about .60 cent more per gallon. Ultimately a diesiel is what you want to tow big loads with, but realistically for the majority of our boats smaller can leave more gas money in the pocket to use in the boats!
PS 20-22MPG for the Nissan around town and HWY

My manual says 87 octane. Anything more is just wasting money really. I don't think you are going to see any measurable difference if you used a higher octane rated fuel.

Whatever your manual says, I'd stick with it.

Just wish they made a duramax suburban (from the factory....not aftermarket).

no worries about octane...I go by Cetane. Diesel is the way to tow.
