Thumbs down Rudder, Rudder port, Strut problems

Had my boat in the shop last week and the guys working on the boat pointed out my rudder and rudder port were bent like the boat had hit a stump. Looking more into it we believe the strut may be bent as well and possibly the prop shaft. My fault for not inspecting the boat better when I purchased it. But regardless I am going to need to purchase all three of these parts and have them replaced and possibly the prop shaft. I have all of the part numbers minus the prop shaft so my question is where would be the best place to purchase these parts from.

Discount Inboard Marine would be a good place to start.

If you have all the part numbers you may want to call great lakes skipper and see what they might have in stock and what kind of deal they might cut you.

Know that the rudder is offset to the prop shaft.

Have them post up some pictures. What does the run out gauge indicate as a wobble in the shaft?

Also when I put a new rudder box in my '93 Maristar 225 I put the new style in and it does require making the hole in the hull a bit larger. Was very easy to do with a roller and sandpaper hooked to a drill.

Here is the place to go, even without the part number they can figure it out. Most likely the Drive shaft is bent.. .003 is NOT alot of play, and if the rudder and rudder port are bent I would be shocked if your drive shaft is not bent. the good news is if you use the USA discount code you at least get 10% off.. so that helps, is the prop reconditioned? If so that may or may not have been done properly so have that checked as well....so don't forget to order a new one of those or have the old one checked.

Good luck, it really isn't all that hard to do, don't forget to have it re-aligned or do it yourself.

Besides now you know it is done and done right, and don't forget to repack it,

How is the gel coat around the rudder as it enter hull? any spider cracking or worse? Also inspect gel coat at union where strut meets hull - most likely okay if minor strike - if prop and shaft took brunt of it.

LAst Spring I whacked a stump with my 01 PS209. It bent the snot out of the rudder box. I contacted Eric at OJ who gave me a quote for the old part number. Luckily we were able to straighten out the rudder and rudder box with a little both of work with a hammer and press. You can be pretty agressive with the tools since the material is fairly ductile.
