This is what I did last year:

If you shop around you can find a good price on the mx650's - definitely not as cheap as the inifinity but definitely worth the extra money. I was in for just over $500.

I just can't (well, choose not to given other priorities, let's be realistic...I have a boat) spend that much coin on speakers that can't possibly be 2.5x better than what I'm going to go with: Polk db651: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P0PF9G

I will just be powering off the HU for now, but will look into getting an amp and a small(ish) sub maybe next year. Seems like an amp is nice but not necessary to get halfway decent sound.

I've got a very basic system in my boat, similar to yours- 4 speakers, all running off the HU. While it does well enough in the boat with the engine off, and it's audible while running at lower speeds, once you get out of the boat and you're swimming along side, it's pretty hard to hear. I assume this has more to do with the speakers being directed at the sides of the boat, rather than out over the water like tower speakers. I'm planning to upgrade my cabin speakers and add an amp, but I'm also seriously thinking about doing something along the lines of Kyle's skylon speaker mount, just to get a little sound out when we're swimming or on the beach with the boat anchored.

I'm with you though, I just can't afford to put $800-900 in audio equipment in to the boat when I can get passable sound for about $350-400.
