My steering cable came in today and I got it installed tonight with relative ease. I went ahead with Skidim's recommendation to go with the 19' cable instead of the 20' that I pulled out and everything fit just fine. I was going to get my wife's help, but got it all run by myself. I am amazed at the difference that it makes. I noticed immediately with the new cable that it easily moved, while the old cable I was unable to move the cable by hand. I can't wait to give it a water test in the Spring. I was also able to complete the changing of the hub oil. Now on to the next project(s).

Was the original cable 20'? If so the 19' probably has less kink and will function smoother.

A simple oil change and belt adjustment. I love the fact that I can do something in my driveway in about and hour/90 minutes and spend less than $25 when, had I taken it to the dealer, I would have spent 2 hrs driving, given them the boat for a week, and been charge $125ish.
Don't get me wrong, MC dealers serve a great purpose but I love being able to do some repairs/service at home.

Mike, I started to take pics of the process, but didn't want to duplicate something on the forum. I can throw something together though if needed. I was finally able to get my impeller pulled tonight. I found some long needle nose and I had one of my panels removed in my rear storage to do a little more extensive engine cleaning and to replace that steering cable. This allowed me to get down lower on the water pump and get better leverage. It was still a little difficult to slip out, but the good news is that it appeared to still be in pretty good shape. The PO said that he had not ever changed it after 4 years, so I knew it had to be done. I will slip the new one in place, in the Spring, which btw, is less than 11 weeks away. |
