Fuel Shutoff

All,

Normally during my winterization I disconnect the fuel to ensure the carb is dry for storage (Along with all the other PM work and etc) I have always done it with my small engines (mower, blower, etc) along with a dose of stabil in the fuel.)


Is this a good/bad/? Idea? If its a good idea.... I was thinking about using a fuel shutoff valve. Anyone know where to get one? I saw a couple of cheap, plastic, lawn-mower types, but I am looking for a nice, metal, quality unit (I think the hose is 3/8)

Two schools of thought on this. Treat the fuel with Stabil Red for storage and it will be fine. Some people think the fuel will clog up passages. Dry storage is good as no passages to get clogged. There will be oxidation which will clog passages.

I always treat my fuel and have not had any problems in my boat, outboard, snowmobile, snow blower or leaf blower.

I took my 4160 carb off the boat in late sept. to do a rebuild on it over the winter. The fuel was drained at that time. I took one fuel bowl cover to inspect inside, it looked extremely clean. I just took the other cover off yesterday and found white powder forming. I suspect that is is from moisture. At the lake I live on we have had lots of people complain about water in their gas.( People buy their gas from different locations, not just one place.) Put a good fuel water separator inline and stabil in the tank and forget it. I saw a video that showed a marine mechanic blowing air from a table fan over a glass of gasoline and it formed water droplets in a matter minutes. Gas is not what it used to be. Be sure to use stabil marine. 2c

I use Stabil. Still running the origional 4110 carb. 21 years.

I do use blue Stabil too... And, fog the motor.

I typically used to seal the race motors (intake/exhaust) too but haven't done it with the boat; although normally working on winter upgrades so...

But I am still thinking of getting a shutoff...

Stabil all the way.
I have two old Trans Ams and generally start them up once a year. (QJet carbeb.) A couple pumps on the accel pedal, and away they go.
