MPG Towing

I'm quite used to pulling a lightweight & low profile PS190. I was surprised to need to fill up once on my way from Norris to Cincy this weekend with a X1. I averaged just a hair over 10mpg, pulling with a Nissan Armada with a cargo box on top(some moderate hills and towing around 70mph). This ain't no hybrid and I don't expect it to get 30 mpg, but just want a gut check. Is 10mpg is normal?

It may impact my shopping choices when we look for a new tow vehicle this summer.

Taller and heavier boats will affect you gas mileage exponentially in my experience. I can get about 22 towing the S&S at 65 with 3 and minimal equipment. Load it up with stuff, 5 people, full cooler, toys, full gas vs 1/4 tank...
Pretty soon I'm looking at 16.

Ryan, tell Sue you need to buy a place at Norris so you leave the boat there! Just think of the gas savings.

great point ... if i was a sarcastic bastard, and i'm not of course, i'd say i dont know what my mileage is towing my X14 1/4 mile twice a year ... once to put it in and once to pull it out ... occasionally i need to use a different ramp and then its maybe 5 miles ... that probably cost me another 25 cents

my neighbors log home is for sale ... then you could be my neighbor!

My Touareg TDI gets 13-14 for that same tow Cincy to Norris, 29 all around not towing, but I am not shy with it, 80 downhill and 70 up. I run her in manual, 8th on the downhills, 7th gear on the ups, occasionally have to drop her to 6th if I get stuck and have to pass on the uphills. RPM range is 1800 to 2800. Loving the TDI!

I would say for a gasser, this is about right, my Ram 1500 would get about 9 for the same tow, and you would really have to do 85 downhill and be lucky for 65 uphill without blowing out the RPM's.
