89 Tristar sending unit

Anyone familiar with this type of sending unit?

All I've seen so far are the types with floats and a circuit board with magnets.

Mine has this top cap that comes off and get resistance through this floating arm on its base. It looks like I can just replace the top but not sure. Anyone have experience with these?

pretty close, that one looks mechanical only and mine appears to be electrical and mechanical. The top is beat up pretty bad but looks like it has a gauge and has electrical connections too.
