Binoculars

I'm looking for binoculars for both or my boys and would appreciate your suggestions (good and bad). They will be primarily used for hunting and I would prefer to stay below $200 each.

thanks

ex-bro in law got a pair of Pentax last month.... seems like he's happy with them.
Pentax 62555 8x42 DCF CS Binoculars (Black)

I know they're above your price-point, but this comparison might help.

little bit cheaper at B&H, but they don't have free shipping..... >read the reviews<

To me for hunting, a bit more magnification over an 8x would be preferred like a good 10x42 roof prism would work well. Personally, I have Leupold predecessor to their current Mojave but those are double the budget you listed. Leupold, Redfield, Nikon, Pentax and Vortex should all have good to medium high quality optics in the <$250 range, which is what I always look for. Buy quality optics and they can keep them for a long time with very good performance. I went thru about 8 different sets of cheaper binoculars over about a 10 year time frame due to various reasons but mostly due to warping of the lens / coatings where I couldn’t seem to get both eyes looking exactly in the same spot (double vision of sorts). My dad always had “old” 7x35, 7x50 and 10x50 boat anchor (heavy) which worked fairly well other than being extremely heavy. When I bought the ones I have now, it came down to those or Nikon Monarch 7 10x42. You can also move up to a 50mm objective to get more light gathering for lower light conditions but also you add more weight to lug around. My best advice is to go into an Academy (if you have those), Cabelas or Bass Pro Shop and handle/look thru for comparision. Another word of advice, do NOT look thru Zeiss or Swarovski unless you want to add considerable coin (but incredible optics!!!)

I bought my wife some Nikon 8x42 monarch 3s for Christmas, they are very nice and about 180 shipped thru amazon. After researching binoculars, I wanted a water/fog proof set that had a wide field of view and was light

I am very happy with my 10x42 Pentax. They have been serving me well for the last four or five years.

Thanks for the replies and keep them coming.

I've attempted to go into local retailers and compare, but this close to Christmas, most everything is out of stock. They either have the really cheap or really expensive ones left on the shelves.

do you have Academy Sports & Outdoors in your area? I can understand the big box stores being out of inventory following the Christmas rush and you might try going to a larger camera store or independent hunting/fishing or gun shop that might have higher prices but still have inventory (to hands-on compare, then order online ).

I have also found that the various brands even with equivalent models "fit" each individual differently. So it truly is best to try them out to see which fits better within the comparable brands & models.

Academy has very little left, same for Dick's.
The two Outdoor stores are blown out as well.

Yes, I live in the south. Bino's are either snapped up for hunting or football. Both of which are popular in tha state of AL these days!
