Exhaust Riser Questions
When I did my engine build I separated the riseres (total pita) and re did them. I sent them off to be bead blasted and they came back real clean. Started with fresh paint and even hand painted the Mastercraft back on them.
Ok now they are leaking again. I have a real hard time believing that they are supposed to leak. I'm thinking about separating them again and putting another gasket in. The last gasket was put in dry. Would it be better to gasket cement it in or not ?

Another gasket would help, but typically, the mating surfaces are not true and become warped. The powerboat repair shop I used to work for would always true them up on the disc sander before reinstalling them.

You could do that. Or remove the manifolds &, risers bring them to a machine shop and get them re decked.

Pull the risers and check the mating surfaces with a straight edge... true up the one thats not square. A flat surface and some emery cloth works well. New gaskets and reinstall... shouldnt need any extra sealant.

mine were leaking (seeping) so I took them apart and cleaned them and noticed a bit of pitting. So I used permated orange (overkill) http://www.permatex.com/products/pro...t-maker-detail mine don't seap or dripat all and I don't have to over torque the bolts.
picture is 1 year after...but I inspect every year now because they are 17 years old.

Or Apply to a new gasket on both sides? This was my issue pitting. Your way seems a lot easier and she may keep the name boat all day.

I even cleaned out the insides with Evaporust... showed it in another thread...but it would take hundreds of $$$ to get all oxidation down to bare metal...

If it's just a regular gasket, use some gasket sealant. I think skidim has some gaskets that have some sort of sealant built in as well. But when I did mine, I recalled JimN saying "use airplane gasket sealant." So, I did. No leaks for the rest of the time I owned my boat.

Mine leaked after I R&R last winter.
Just new gaskets, no sealant. Leaking seemed to stop as the summer wore on and we used the boat. I thought about R&R again to add some Permatex or something, but since the gaskets set I didn't bother. Next time I R&R for whatever reason, I will add some black sealant to both sides.
