sparkles now shine (metalflake salvation)
The metalflake stripe on my '78 S&S had oxidized so badly that the flakes were exposed on the surface and it was no longer possible to bring back any gloss, so I decided to lay on a protective (and glossy) coating over top to protect the flakes. I wetsanded carefully one last time (400 then 600 grit), masked everything, then sprayed on 4 coats of automotive 2 part urethane. I can't believe how well it restored the sparkle of the flakes, as well as the color! Hopefully having the protective coating will prevent any further degradation of the original surface, and will keep it glossy for years to come. New vinyl (correct font, finally!) to be cut and applied shortly.

Good work. I need to do the same to mine. I speculated that clear would do the trick as it looks great wet. Now I know it will.

Hello Bellinghamster, I couldn't agree more with spraying clear over the flake. I am doing it on my boat but the only thing with mine is I have to spray the whole boat dew to all the flake I have. It does look great good job.

Man, I am in the process of wet sanding my boat right now. It looks really similar to the pics you posted on top but the gel coat is in really good shape other wise. I am hoping that after sanding, polishing, and waxing that it is able to look as good as what you were able to get... If not, I might have to go the route you did. Looks great!
