Glad everyone was ok in that crash! But IMO it had nothing to do wtih confidence in the diesel truck and all about confidence in your tires and wife's decision making capability. Again glad there were no injuries. Big trucks hydro plane with crappy tires just like little ones. Whether driving a F350 pulling a house or a Yugo it's not a good idea to use cruise when it's raining.
To the op, older Prostar and short trips in the flatlands, pretty much any V6 SUV or midsize pickup rated at 4000lbs or better will do the trick. Obviously the bigger the vehicle, the easier on drivetrain and brakes and the more comfortable the ride, but anything in the Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, Explorer size vehicles will do fine.
