"Metal filings" or pieces of metal? If they are bits/chunks of metal, it could be your damper plate. Years ago the springs in the damper plate on my '87 began to break apart and settled down where the starter engages the flywheel. The damper plate was still working fine, so it took me awhile to figure out what was going on....
