My guess is carb ice and he got too low, aimed it to let the wings take the impact on both houses. I think he did the best he could considering.
That's too bad. I flew on an Aero Commander in the late 80s. Very similar shape. I think there were quite a few 1121 accidents late in its service life as well.
We lost a member of our ski club last month. He lost an engine on his Piper PA-30 taking off out of Amarillo and was unable to recover. Very sad situation. He had been flying for years. Heck of a guy and wonderful family. We will miss him a lot.
