This is only my opinion, but I prefer a direct drive over a v drive because it allows the occupants to spread out within the confines of the boat. With that being said, a 205 will have a better ski wake than a 209, but the 209 has a lot more room in the boat compared to the 205. If you have never had a 190 or any of its derivatives, then you won't miss anything in the wake department. If you go the 209 route, choose 2003 and up as their hull has a hook on the rear which the first couple model years did not. Gel can be buffed out as a DIY project, interiors can be reupholstered for 2500 -3500, engines can be rebuilt for 3 grand or so. And actually the premium boat these days is the 197/x7, (a 190 hull with a place to stuff the kids).
