Usually the tranny will have a placard on it that should tell ya. Also on the engine should be a data plate for the motor, just have to search around for it, if it isn't corroded etc. Also, check the prop/shaft size. A 1" usually is a 1:1 ratio, velvet drive, whereas on these older boats a 1 1/8" is often used for a power slot 1:1.5 reduction.
