Yes the mold can get behind the vinyl. The back side of vinyl is not as smooth but that usually would mean that there is moisture in the seat or the air got pretty humid. Not sure about the air in the Northeast, but down here in the Southeast, it can get pretty thick. It almost doesn't matter what kind of air flow you have in the dead heat of summer, bc that air will have plenty of moisture in it. Not sure what else to recommend to you though aside from replacing the cover, but I wouldn't want to do that. Have you tried to let that Totally Awesome sit on an area for a few minutes before you started to scrub? Whatever you end up using, make sure you get something that will kill the mold spores and keep them from coming back.
