Pffft... no way. Unless he's looking to compete, where a world class wake/table will help, a "regular" direct drive will do just fine. Especially for someone just getting into the sport.

A Prostar with the base engine (240hp) will top out around 41mph with a footer, which is fine... unless youre a big guy, like to foot fast, or need a little extra speed for one-foot stuff. Boats with the HO Ford (92+) or LT1 (93+) will give you the little extra you need, if thats the case. Or the standard Ford engine can be upgraded to HO power levels (and then some) for ~$1500... so that would open up your choices to older boats.
