I am partial to D3, they seem so forgiving and will easily transition to course skiing. Although I have upgraded thorught out the years, I started the course on a d3 barely scrapping a few bouys at 30mph. Now years later and still hacking up the course, my D3 still performs for me at 34 thru 28. Capable of alot more and easy for beginners. With that said, I am sure other skiis are just as suitable. I have heard great things about the HO Triumph and I am considering getting one for my lazy days. You can find an early D3 on ski-it - again for cheap.
