I have the 2271 on my x45 and it does great with 14 people and about the same ballast. Granted I have the 8.1. I think the 2241 might still be overkill.

My vote is for head gaskets. It may only have 300 hours, but it's 20 years old. Also, for a good compression test, the engine really needs to be warm, but since it wont start, you're kind of stuck....
