I decided to fabricate a rear seat for our 79 S@S . I wanted it to look like it could have come in the boat originally , I used the 79 deluxe seat as a model for my project

I chased the same issue on my 79 S@S ,temp would rise to 195 degrees at idle . New impeller etc etc, finally bit the bullet and purchased a new RWP from Skidim. Boat has never gone over 160 degrees...

I hope you found the problem but I am doubtful that is why water was in your cylinders. A common practice with sprint cars to remove all fluids in the cylinder before starting is to roll the engine...

Did you install new gaskets on the risers ? It is very important to make sure both mating surfaces are clean and flat . No way the water entered the cylinders thru a head gasket at 30 psi hose...

I just removed my fuel tank a couple weeks ago it was not hard and hopefully your tank is not full. It may help if you take a marker and put a line on the filler hose to the tank to mark orientation...
