If I recall properly it is a velvet drive 1.5:1 transmission. Again, he can't prove squat about that drive train so the assumption is that it is just a core for rebuilding.

Just rebuild the Edelbrock. Heck, I replaced my Holly with an Edelbrock and she has never run better. Edelbrocks are easier to rebuild that Holly'stoo, IMHO.

I'd say it is the shaft seal leaking. likely need to repack and set the gland nut to the proper drip rate. You may just need to snug it down a bit to get the packing to bite back down and seal it...

I would think that is normal since your ignition system should start to pull some current as the coil(s) charge up.

You might look for corrosion at all of your contact points between the battery...
