I agree the smartest thing to do is take the thermostat out. I've re-used the gasket in mine for 2 years without any leaks. I've also had success cutting my own with a generic roll of gasket paper...

You're better off draining the block, removing the thermostat, reinstalling the plugs and then sucking up the anti-freeze. Additionally, it takes me at least 4 gallons of AF before it starts to come...

Heads, intake and cam would be the most common upgrades. You could always add a supercharger if you really want to get aggressive.
Oh, and upgrading to a CNC prop will make more of a difference...
