Most are water-lubricated and aren't designed to turned out of the water. I accidentally hit the throttle once when mine was on the trailer and it squeaked as well.

Probably a little overkill, but I put new impeller every year. Put the old one in a plastic bag in storage for emergencies. Then just keep swapping that each year.
