Oetiker style clamps (ear less) are the preferred clamping method. They provide an even pressure around the entire hose. Amazon has them plus the tool. A little more cost but worth it in the end.

It sounds like a piston pin to me. Had a Z28 that sounded just like that. Piston had a crack near the pin. Fine when cold and thick oil. Noisy when oil thinned out and piston expanded....
